Visibility-based Intelligent WAN Traffic Acceleration
and Management

PacketeerPacketeer offers the most comprehensive integrated suite of WAN optimization technologies available on the market. The technologies include automatic traffic identification and classification, monitoring, diagnostics, quality of service, compression, protocol acceleration, HTTP pre-fetch and caching.  These technologies are available across an integrated set of appliances and also in one comprehensive appliance.

Packeteer Diagram 1Packeteer’s intelligence based WAN optimization enables you understand what traffic is on your network so the you can apply the appropriate technologies and procedures to ensure optimized flow. Integration ensures the technologies will work together and not cancel our each technology’s desired results. The goal is to manage traffic flow to optimize application performance, minimize WAN latency and maximize investments in WAN infrastructure.

Deep Visibility

Visibility enables you to understand what traffic is on your network so you can apply the appropriate technologies, implement proper procedures and diagnose issues to optimize traffic. Packeteer’s visibility technology automatically identifies and classifies over 600 applications at layer seven, regardless of port. Packeteer measures hundreds of characteristics about traffic, creating an extensive collection of measurement data. These metrics form the basis of Packeteer’s reports.

Packeteer’s reports offer insight into:

  • Performance: how long application traffic spends in different portions of the network
  • Utilization: bandwidth usage by applications, locations, and users
  • Diagnostic Aids: Information that helps when trying to analyze and pinpoint a problem

Packeteer provides specific reporting to help manage VoIP. These reports let you view performance metrics for VoIP calls such as VoIP Latency, VoIP Jitter, VoIP Loss, MOS multiplied by 10, R-Factor, Class Hits, and Peak Flows.

Packeteer Diagram 2Packeteer’s threshold setting and monitoring enables you to maintain a proactive network management posture. You can set a variety of caution and critical level thresholds.

When a caution level threshold is breached, appropriate staff can be automatically notifies so they can react before the situation is noticed by users. PacketShaper’s Adaptive Response technology can be configured to take automatic steps to protect the business application performance.

Application QoS

Based on Packeteer’s patented TCP Rate Control technology enables IT staff to manage traffic flow efficiently and reliably by providing business-critical such as voice and video over IP and ERP and CRP applications traffic the priority it needs when it needs it, to slow down less delay-sensitive traffic and restrict or eliminate unwanted traffic.

Packeteer Diagram 3TCP Rate Control paces traffic, telling the end stations to slow down or speed up. Rather than discarding packets from a congested queue, TCP Rate Control proactively paces packets to prevent congestion and enable a more efficient network. TCP Rate Control works from one side of a link so, in many cases appliances do not necessarily have to be deployed in every location.

Intelligent Acceleration

Visibility lets you know what to accelerate. Packeteer provides a variety of acceleration and compression technologies to overcome latency and increase bandwidth capacity. Among the technologies are caching which dramatically reduces file save and retrieval times and significantly lowers network traffic by eliminating protocol chattiness and virtually placing files at user locations for local access.

Compression reduces packet sizes, reduces latency and frees up bandwidth for use by other applications. File differencing compresses data and transfers only file changes.

TCP acceleration enables the transfer of large amounts of data over high-latency links. The integrated technologies also facilitate server and storage consolidation projects by significantly reducing the increased traffic associated with centralizing data and enabling LAN-like response with cached data.

Packeteer Diagram 4Remote Services

Packeteer has integrated full-fidelity, native Microsoft Windows Server® networking, sharing, management and security processes in the same unified system that delivers great application performance.

Packeteer’s systems deliver localized Microsoft print, Systems Management Server (SMS), DNS/DHCP and Domain Controller so you can eliminate residual remote servers from branch locations. There is no need to backup remote cached files because they are backed up at the core.

Packeteer’s Advanced Services fully and continuously synchronize files between sites, delivering fast file access and application acceleration without sacrificing file integrity or negatively impacting users or security.
